World News: Six killed as more tornadoes tear through US midwest

A LINE of violent thunderstorms roared across middle America, killing six people in two states, with several tornadoes touching down in Oklahoma and high winds pounding rural Kansas.

The storms arrived as forecast, just two days after a massive tornado tore through the south-west Missouri town of Joplin and killed at least 122 people.

Several tornadoes struck Oklahoma City and its suburbs during yesterday's rush hour, killing at least four people and injuring at least 60 others.

Mediacal officials said four people died west of Oklahoma City in Canadian County, where a weather-monitoring site in El Reno recorded 151mph winds.

In Kansas, police said two people died when high winds threw a tree into their van near the small town of St John, about 100 miles west of Wichita.

More severe weather was expected today as the storms continued east.

"Unfortunately, this event will likely continue for some time," Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin said.

"I am asking all Oklahomans to stay aware of the weather and to take proper precautions to keep themselves out of harm's way."

Mubarak faces shooting trial

Egypt's prosecutor general has ordered former President Hosni Mubarak put on trial on charges of corruption and conspiring in the deadly shootings of protesters during the uprising that ousted him.

The charges could carry the death sentence said the prosecutor's spokesman.

Footballer on gun charges

Former Fulham midfielder Ahmad Elrich has been charged with multiple gun and drugs offences.

The 29-year-old Elrich, who played for Fulham in the 2005-6 Premier League season, was remanded in custody.

Elrich was stopped by police for having a faulty tail light while riding a motorcycle in western Sydney last Thursday. Police say they found two pistols loaded with ammunition and a drug for which Elrich did not have a prescription.

He was charged with 11 offences.

Trucker feels the pressure

A NEW Zealand lorry driver said he blew up like a balloon when he fell on to the fitting of a compressed air hose.

Steven McCormack, 48, was standing on his lorry's footplate on Saturday when he slipped and fell, breaking an air brake hose.

The brass fitting pierced his left buttock and started pumping air into his body.

Full recovery for sick PM

Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad is expected to make a full recovery after a procedure to unblock an artery, doctors say.

Mr Fayyad, 59, was admitted to Seton Medical Centre in Austin, Texas, on Sunday for chest pains and was treated on Monday. He has now left hospital.

Soldiers and tribesmen in street battles

Fighters from Yemen's powerful tribes fired on government buildings, prompting soldiers to respond with intense shelling in street battles that have left at least 38 dead as the uprising against President Ali Abdullah Saleh threatened to become a militia-led revolt.

Medical officials said 24 tribesmen were killed in yesterday's fighting, the fiercest on Sanaa's streets in years. Government officials said 14 soldiers were killed.
