Works spark false alarms

THE Gyle shopping centre had to be evacuated twice after nearby water works sparked two false alarms.

Fire crews were called in around 10am and 1pm yesterday after work by Scottish Water caused an increase in pressure to the sprinkler system leading to the false alarms, with shoppers and staff told to leave the building.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said crews were also called to RBS on nearby Redheughs Avenue at 2.25pm after a "fluctuation in water pressure" set off alarms.

Helen Lennox, head of corporate affairs at Scottish Water, apologised for the disruption caused.
