Masonry surrounding the pub sign came loose and trapped the three men on the ground. They were freed by other workmen and passers-by.

One man was taken to Glasgow's Victoria Infirmary, but died at short time later.

The two other men, aged 22, were taken to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride.

One is being treated for leg injuries, the other has been discharged.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "A post-mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death and a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident will follow.

"The Health and Safety Executive has been informed."

Sam Black, 67, an eyewitness, said the accident happened suddenly.

"The boys were just taking the scaffolding away and the three of them were working underneath, and people were walking past when the sign just slipped down and landed on three people.

"Everybody just went and ran over to get them out but it looked quite bad."
