The woman alighted from the service – the 16.39 Dyce to Edinburgh Waverley - at Haymarket station in Edinburgh and reported the incident to rail staff and police.

The man responsible is further described as being about 5 ft 10 in height with short grey hair. He was wearing a round-necked light blue t-shirt, with a brown long sleeved top underneath it and brown trousers. He also had a red tattoo on his right hand.

He spoke with a Tyneside accent and it is believed he was travelling on to Newcastle.

Detective Constable David McAlister, the BTP officer in charge of the enquiry, is appealing for anyone who was on the busy train and witnessed the sexual assault to contact him.

He said: “I am asking anyone who has information which can help identify the man responsible to contact BTP as a matter of urgency.”

CCTV from on the train and at stations will be reviewed in an attempt to identify the man responsible.
