Woman killed after car travels wrong way along M8

A WOMAN died and her teenage passenger was seriously injured when their car was hit by a vehicle travelling the wrong way on a motorway.

The 52-year-old woman was driving a Fiat Punto eastbound on the M8 near junction 25 at Cardonald, when the car was struck by a Renault Megane being driven westbound on the same carriageway.

The accident happened at about 11.35pm last night.

The woman died at the scene while her passenger, an 18-year-old boy, was taken by ambulance to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow where he is being treated for leg and chest injuries.

Hospital staff describe his condition as serious but stable.

The 36-year-old driver of the Renault Megane was taken by ambulance to the same hospital where he is being treated for minor injuries.

Strathclyde Police have appealed for any information about the incident.

A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
