Woman jailed after conning city jeweller out of £9,000

A WOMAN who conned a city jeweller out of more than £9,000 worth of valuable items has been jailed for nine months.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday heard that Nicole Saunders, 55, visited a jeweller on Easter Road posing as a buyer from Barbados and placed a large order. At a later date, Saunders and jeweller Ali Yenidogon travelled to a hotel where the accused was to get money for the order.

At the hotel, Saunders excused herself but failed to return. The jeweller contacted police and the court heard 8,000 worth of items was recovered.

Saunders admitted obtaining 9,250 worth of jewellery by fraud between 26 and 28 September last year at an address at Easter Road. She also admitted two other theft offences and having a passport belonging to another person.

The court heard that Saunders, of Cornton Vale Prison, suffered from psychiatric difficulties.

Sheriff Graeme Warner recommended her for deportation to Trinidad and Tobago after her sentence is served.
