Woman died after driving the wrong way down road

A WOMAN who died after driving the wrong way down a main road and crashing into four cars was named by police yesterday.

Carol Anne Greig, 54, was killed when she drove her Nissan Micra southwards on the north-bound side of the A90 Dundee to Aberdeen road, near Forfar.

Emergency services raced to the scene after receiving a number of calls from terrified drivers shortly before the collisions at about 10:55am on Saturday morning.

Mrs Grieg, from Angus, was declared dead at the scene.

The Micra collided with a Vauxhall Zafira, a Peugeot 107, a Toyota Rav 4 and a Citroen Berlingo.

The 49-year-old male driver of the Toyota was trapped in his vehicle for a short time but was freed by fire crews and taken to Dundee's Ninewells Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police said that the other drivers, all women aged 39, 48 and 67, sustained slight or no injuries.

It is understood a number of vehicles, which had been travelling northwards on the A90, also had to take evasive action to avoid the Micra.

The A90 was closed for several hours on Saturday morning which accident investigators examined the road.

A statement from Tayside Police said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have seen the '52'-registered silver Nissan Micra travelling on the A926 and then southwards on the A90 on the northbound carriageway to contact us.

"Inquiries are ongoing and a dedicated team has been established to deal with the numerous responses to the witness appeal."

Meanwhile, another driver was injured on the same road in the early hours of yesterday.

A black Volvo left the carriageway mid-way between the Inchture and Longforgan junctions at about 1am.

The 60-year-old male driver suffered head and internal injuries, and was taken to Ninewells Hospital where his condition was last night described as critical.

Police said that he is not local.
