It is understood that the pair lived at a nearby cottage close to the cliff edge.

Police, coastguard and a lifeboat were called to the scene around 1.20am today.

The death is being treated as “unexplained” with door-to-door inquiries underway in the quite rural settlement.

Police are in the process of contacting the woman’s next-of-kin.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We were called today around 1.20am and attended the scene along with the coastguard and ambulance service.

“Officers are investigating an unexplained death in that area.

“Inquiries are still ongoing.”
