The alleged assault took place in Livingston on Monday.
It’s understood the boy was kicked by a woman.
A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “A 42-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in connection with an assault against a child outside a primary school in Livingston on Monday, September 14.
“She is due to appear before Livingston Sheriff Court today.”
