The victim, who has not yet been named, was rushed to Monklands General Hospital following the incident, but doctors could not save her.

The tragic accident happened shortly after 9.30pm last night.

Another person who was in the house at the time called an ambulance.

Today, a spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said there were no suspicious circumstances. She added: "It was a tragic accident and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

Six years ago a schoolboy died in similar circumstances.

Mark Rockingham, 12, of Kettering, Northamptonshire, severed an artery when a knife punctured his chest.

Mark was found by paramedics after his family called the emergency services. He died later in hospital.

Police officers said at the time it was thought the youngster had fallen on to the open dishwasher while reaching across it to a cupboard.
