SCIENTISTS have discovered a gene variation that appears to predict the rate at which Alzheimer's disease will develop.

The findings may mean drugs can be developed which would prevent or delay some of the devastating effects associated with the disease, scientists at Washington University School of Medicine, who led the study, said.

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia and causes a decline in mental capability, affecting memory and reasoning.
