Why don't you...

Sign up for a Bollywood lesson

IF THERE is one style of dancing that has captured the imagination in recent months it is the Bollywood musical move, which involves a certain looseness of hips and circling of the arms and looks rather fetching when performed as part of a large group. If you feel inspired by the musical Bollywood Dreams, and certain bank adverts that employ the colourful style, then why not check out Dance Base, in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket, where Bollywood Dance classes are available as part of the Fringe festival.

Take your partner by the hand

Ceilidhs in Scotland have never been out of fashion but now it seems our English cousins are beginning to learn what all the fuss is about. Ed McCabe organises the London Ceilidh Club , which meets monthly. He says: "After ten years of house music, taking drugs and individualism, ceilidh is tactile, friendly and totally uncool. I take a survey after all our evenings and people say the one emotion they have after a ceilidh is happiness."

Organise an Outer Hebrides shin dig

Last week the stony-faced councillors on the Western Isles voted to ease their "Never on a Sunday" blanket ban on entertainment licenses on some of the main islands in the Outer Hebrides. OK, so they also rejected a move by two Lewis businessmen, Jason King and Joe Engebretson, to operate a "Viking Paintball" facility at a farm on the outskirts of Stornoway on a Sunday, on the grounds that it would be substantially detrimental to the amenity and tranquility of the area, but they haven’t ruled out dancing - because it comes under heritage and culture. Each application is being judged on a case by case basis, so you could be first to host a rave on the Isle of Harris. Or not.

Shimmy at The Famous Spiegeltent

The Famous Spiegeltent arrives as if by magic for three weeks every Festival. Every night La Clique club is hosted within the beautiful 1920s cabaret salon decorated with velvet, brocade, chandeliers and mirrors. This year, it will be set up in Edinburgh’s George Square gardens and during the day it will serve as a venue for children’s shows, comedy and music before it morphs into the most stylish venue in which to shimmy in during the evening. Music is of the louche lounge variety, so dress cool.

Work it 1980s-style

It had to happen. After Geri Halliwell reprised It’s Raining Men in 1980s-style leisure wear, and J-Lo paid homage to Flashdance, with I’m Glad, there was a retro-inspired return to dancewear. Dirty Dancing remains one of the most popular video hires of all time - and not just because of Patrick Swayze’s bare chested dance class - plus legwarmers are in next season. Accept it.
