Which cities are the best in the world to live in?

Vienna, is the best city in the world to live in according to a new report.

Edinburgh placed 46th, ahead of Glasgow (55) and Aberdeen (59) in a study which examined 230 cities to determine where in the world offers the best quality of life.

 The figures come from the 18th annual quality of life report from American HR consultancy giant, Mercer.

The Austrian capital Vienna was crowned the best city in the world for quality of living, followed by Zurich (2), Auckland (3), and Munich (4).

Vancouver (5) was North America’s highest ranking city, and Singapore is the highest ranking Asian city, holding 26th place.

German and Swiss cities dominated the top 10, outshining iconic global centres like London (39), Paris (37) and New York (44).

Access to healthcare, quality of education, housing and environmental factors were all taken into consideration by the researchers at Mercer.

The results of the study, the most comprehensive of its kind, are used by international corporations to assess how safe it is to send their employees to a given city.  

 Despite recent economic uncertainties, Western European cities continue to enjoy some of the highest quality of living worldwide; they fill seven places in the top-10 list.

The Austrain capital takes the title for the best city to live in for the seventh year running.

  At the lower end of the scale in Europe are Kiev (176), Tirana (179), and Minsk (190).

The worst cities in the world to live in according to the report were: Bagdad (Iraq), Bangui (Central African Republic), Sana’a (Yemen), Port-au-Prince (Haiti) and Khartoum (Sudan)

It was a poor showing for UK cities, which failed to make an impact on the list, Belfast (64) and Birmingham (53) joined Glasgow and Aberdeen just out of the top 50.
