Weekend will give families a positive view of deafness

FAMILIES with newly-diagnosed deaf children are invited to a free information and support weekend.

The event will give families the chance to learn more about childhood deafness and discuss any worries they have, as well as meeting others in the same position.

Iain Simpson, family weekends manager of the National Deaf Children's Society, said: "The weekend event in Edinburgh will be a powerful source of support for families, providing them with a positive view of deafness. It will bring families together, so they can share their experiences and understand they are not alone.

Parents will also meet deaf adults who will share their insights into deafness and explain what it is like to be a deaf child in the family.

"Parents who have the opportunity to meet other families and discuss their concerns are more likely to develop close family relationships, which lead to higher levels of confidence and self-esteem among deaf children."

The weekend will take place at the Holiday Inn in Corstorphine Road from 19 to 21 February. For details call 0141-354 7850 or e-mail [email protected].
