Her daughter remains in a “critical” condition, police said.

It is understood police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident which is believed to have been a domestic incident.

Police have launched an investigation to piece together the last movements of the women, who are from Paisley, Renfrewshire.

Detective Inspector David Wagstaff, of Police Scotland, said: “Inquiries are at a very early stage, and we are piecing together the movements of Margaret and her daughter.

“We know that both women were in the Paisley area around 09:00 hours on Thursday, 9 May. However, we are trying to establish their movements from that time until 07:00 hours this morning, when they were found with serious injuries.

“We have been unable as yet to speak to Margaret’s daughter due to her ill-health, and I really need anyone who can help us put together their last known movements to come forward due to the seriousness of the incident.”

There was a heavy police presence at the hotel yesterday afternoon with dozens of uniformed officers and detectives at the scene.

Forensic experts were called to the hotel to examine the areas where the women were found.

Det Insp Wagstaff said the women had access to a red Suzuki Swift, which was later recovered from the car park of the hotel in James Watt Way.

“I would appeal to anyone who saw these two women in their vehicle to come forward to police,” he said.

Last night, a number of Paisley residents who knew the family spoke of their disbelief at the family tragedy.

Neighbour Gerald Murray, who lives next door to the McDonough, family told The Scotsman: “We’ve been neighbours for years but I didn’t know them well. I think Margaret was divorced. I last saw her earlier this week.

“I think Nicola worked for the council. She always seemed quite happy.”

Local councillor Mark Macmillan, whose ward includes the area where the family lived, said: “This is a tragic incident. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased.”
