Scotland’s weather: Temperature set to drop to -10 as weather warning issued for Scotland

A weather warning is in place for northern Scotland for the next three days, with snow and ice forecast and temperatures in parts to drop to -10C.

Temperatures are set to drop to -3C in Edinburgh, -2 in Glasgow with areas of the Highlands set to drop to -10C.

Drivers have been warned to leave extra time for their Monday morning commute due to icy roads during rush hour, following a weekend of wintry weather.

A Met Office yellow warning for ice across much of the UK and Scotland is in place, with snow and ice forecast for northern Scotland.

Schools in Shetland have closed as a result of heavy snow, with a council spokesperson confirming: “After overnight snow has fallen across most of Shetland, a decision has been made to close all schools and early years settings today.”

The Eric Gray at Seafield centre will also be closed with the weather set to be monitored regarding schools opening tomorrow.

A yellow weather warning covering Moray, Na h-Eileanan Siar, Highland, Orkney Islands and the Shetland Islands – where snow is forecast to continue.

The warning reads: “A few centimetres of snow are likely at low levels over a given 24 hour period, with the potential for 10-15 cm above 200 metres, especially across parts of the Highlands. Ice will be additional hazard, especially Tuesday night.”

Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said the cold conditions moved in from the Arctic over the weekend, and he warned Monday morning commuters to leave plenty of time for their journeys.

He said: “We could well see some wintry showers develop tonight across the middle band of the UK, with a risk of snow on high ground and slippery surfaces on lower areas."

The forecaster has said overnight sleet will leave behind slippery surfaces which could cause “injuries from slips and falls” and “icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths”.
