Scotland weather: Storm set to hit on Wednesday

Two yellow “Be aware” severe weather warnings were issued today by the agency, which said storm-force winds of up to 80mph in western Scotland on Wednesday could cause “significant disruption”.

Its spokesman said: “The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel and perhaps also power supplies.

“Winds of this strength have the potential to uproot trees and perhaps cause damage to buildings, and with frequent heavy, wintry showers as well, driving conditions are likely to be very difficult.

“Also, large waves could pose a risk of spray and over topping to western and northern coastal areas of Scotland.”

However, forecasters said uncertainty remained over the exact path of the low pressure system due to move eastwards from Iceland, and its wind strengths.

The Met Office said snow, sleet and hail are expected to fall from tomorrow until noon on Monday, especially above 200m (670ft).

This could affect much of Scotland apart from the east coast, Western isles and Orkney and Shetland.

The spokesman said: “Accumulating snow may lead to travel disruption. Icy stretches in association with the showers are also likely as well as difficult driving conditions due to strong winds and blowing snow.

“The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel on Sunday into Monday morning.”
