As wet and windy weather swept across the country on Monday, a temperature of -5.9°C was recorded this morning in Kinbrace.
In a tweet, the Met Office said this is “provisionally the joint coldest start to the Early Spring Bank Holiday Monday on record”.
The record is shared with the same location, which also saw the mercury drop to -5.9°C in 2012.
It comes after April saw its lowest average minimum temperatures since 1922.
However, as of Friday, the UK had seen 218.8 hours of sunshine in April, making it the second sunniest on record.
The Met Office said that as we move towards polling day on Thursday the weather in Scotland will return to a mixture of sunshine and showers.
A spokesperson said: “We get rid of this area of low pressure around early Tuesday and go back to where we are now, a cold flow from the north with a mix of sunshine and showers.”
In its latest UK forecast, the Met Office said: “Early rain over Northern Ireland spreads eastwards reaching the far east of the UK this afternoon.
“Rain then heavy at times and also some snow on Scottish mountains.
“Becoming windy, especially in southern and western UK, with coastal gales.
“Tonight will have early evening rain over England clearing, clearer spells and showers already over Ireland and Wales following.
“Scotland staying cloudier with rain and hill snow. Windy, especially this evening.”
