The highest temperature of 22C was recorded at Glasgow airport, with Ayrshire, the Borders and the central west Highlands not far behind at 20-21C.

But Met Office forecaster Fraser Ralston, based in Aberdeen, said it looked as though the good weather would only continue into Wednesday in the north of the country.

“Those in the north, Moray, Grampian and the Highlands can look forward to another day of great weather with temperatures around 20-21C again.

“The Central Belt will have a wet and windy afternoon, with the next couple of days, including the weekend, looking cool and breezy.”

Ice-cream sellers did a roaring trade, saying that customers were queuing up to buy ice-cream cones.

Daniela Pallucci, supervisor at Luca’s in Morningside in Edinburgh, said: “We’ve been very, very busy with queues out the door all day, and all this evening as well.

“As soon as the sun comes out we have people here. Everyone likes a vanilla cone: people of all ages, the very young, the very old, everyone.”
