Waverley Station steps shut for work

WAVERLEY station's Princes Street entrance is set to close to the public as a multi-million-pound project to refurbish and modernise the historic steps gets under way.

The 7 million contract will see construction firm Morgan Sindall rebuild Waverley Steps, including double escalators and a feature entrance, which will be enclosed by a steel and glass canopy.

The steps will close to the public on Thursday.

A temporary access bridge spanning platforms 19 and 2 will be used to maintain access between the station and Princes Mall.

Passengers can also reach Princes Street via the north ramp from Waverley Bridge.

Ron McAulay, Network Rail director for Scotland, said: "This project will improve access for thousands of passengers."
