Waverley passenger numbers rise

PASSENGER numbers at Waverley station have increased ten per cent in the last year, new figures show.

More than 19 million travellers passed through the station in 2009/10, according to the Office of Rail Regulation.

Waterloo in London is still easily the UK's busiest train station despite a dip in numbers last year, with 86.4m passengers passing through between April 2009 and March 2010.

London termini occupied eight of the top ten places in the busiest-station table, with the only non-London stations being Birmingham New Street and Glasgow Central.

For stations outside London, there were also ten per cent increases at Glasgow Queen Street and Gatwick Airport.

Waverley is currently undergoing a multi-million-pound refit, including work to install escalators at its Princes Street entrance.
