Water plant set to open on schedule

A WATER treatment plant which will help bring fresh supplies to 450,000 people in Edinburgh and Midlothian is on schedule for completion next year, according to Scottish Water.

The 130 million Glencorse Water Treatment Works will replace Scottish Water's existing facilities at Fairmilehead and Alnwickhill, which are around 100 years old.

Senior project manager Kenny Naylor said: "The Glencorse Water Treatment Works is not only a significant milestone in civil engineering, but it is also a landmark in environmental engineering. We are building a water treatment works fit for the 21st century, replacing two ageing works at Fairmilehead and Alnwickhill.

"We owe much to our Victorian ancestors, who built two outstanding water treatment works to serve Scotland's capital. These are now coming to the end of their working lives. It is important that the new Glencorse works has a similar longevity."

Geoff Aitkenhead, Scottish Water's asset management director, added: "This is a water treatment works fit for the 21st century, at the cutting edge of the construction industry."
