Warning over bogus charity collections

Homeowners must be on their guard against the growing problem of bogus charity collectors, an MSP has warned.

Midlothian North and Musselburgh MSP Colin Beattie said UK charities lose £50 million annually through illegitimate collections.

“The increasing problem of bogus charity collectors poses a real concern, as it causes a great deal of damage to charities across the nation by diverting donations to criminal organisations.

“However, it is important to remember that most collections are legitimate. By making a few simple checks, you can be confident you are giving to legitimate charities that so desperately need our support.

“If you have suspicions that a collections is fraudulent, make sure you report it. The more intelligence is gathered, the more authorities can identify, arrest and convict those involved in such crimes.”

If you think a collection is bogus call Action Fraud on 0300-123 2040.
