Wardens step up drive to clamp down on dog dirt

ENVIRONMENTAL wardens are to boost patrols around Gracemount and St Catherine’s primary schools this month in an effort to clamp down on irresponsible dog owners.

Letters have been issued to 640 parents urging people to report owners who fail to clean up mess left by their pets.

The statement includes a warning about the dangers to children who come into contact with dog excrement.

The fine for dog fouling is £40 – or £60 if not paid within 28 days. City council environment convener, Councillor Lesley Hinds, said: “Not disposing of dog mess properly is an offence which is punishable by an on-the-spot fine.

“The fact that it is being left where pupils can step in it is a health risk and will not be tolerated.

“In addition to the letters being distributed, wardens will be outside the schools later this month to show parents and guardians that we are serious about dealing with this anti-social issue.”
