Walkers set to enjoy true taste of the Highlands

PLANS have been unveiled for tourism initiative for Royal Deeside - a five-mile "gastro ramble".

The spectacular scenery of the Glen Tanar Estate, near Aboyne, will form the backdrop for a hike by 100 hungry ramblers next month.

During the day, the walkers will stop at regular intervals to sample the best of produce from the area in al fresco three-course meals, enjoying the finest venison, meat and other delicacies.

The ramble - a "Tanalonga" -will be staged on the estate on 26 September and is being organised by the Royal Deeside and Cairngorms Destination Management Organisation (DMO), which was established to promote tourism in the area.

A spokeswoman explained: "The five-mile 'gastro ramble' through Royal Deeside will marry together walking and food and drink. More than 100 gastro ramblers are expected to take part in what is hoped will become an annual event.

"Walkers will stop at regular intervals to partake in a three- course meal al fresco.

"The original concept for the Tanalonga comes from an Italian event called the Magnalonga held in San Pietro in Cariano, near Verona - the home of valpolicella. During the Magnalonga, the food stops are at different wineries and other points of interest and walkers can taste local dishes and wines produced there."

Garry Marsden, the chairman of the DMO, said: "We know our visitors are discerning people who like authentic, local food and stunning scenery, so the 'gastro ramble' is perfect for them. This event offers walkers the chance to explore historic sites on the estate, including the Chapel of St Lesmo and Victoria's Fountain, while indulging in tasty local produce."

A number of Deeside restaurants, hotels and food and drink producers have agreed to help prepare the various courses, which are aimed at highlighting the diverse food and drink available across Royal Deeside.
