Villagers protest against 'overwhelming' power plant

CAMPAIGNERS trying to stop "one of the largest power sub-stations in Europe" being built next to a village are calling on Energy Secretary Ed Miliband to "control" the way electricity generated by offshore wind farms is brought ashore.

Villagers in Little Dunham, Norfolk, say an energy firm is planning to build an "overwhelming" power plant near their homes and has failed to carry out proper consultation. The plant – which it is claimed would occupy at least 22 acres – would transfer power generated by a North Sea wind farm to the National Grid.

Villagers say other coastal communities will be faced with similar developments as the number of offshore wind farms increases. Opponents have set up an action group, but the energy firm behind the plan disputes the complaints.

Bosses at Warwick Energy argue that the plant will "not have a significant impact on the local environment".
