Nominated by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who underwent the soaking yesterday, Ms Lamont joked that she had discovered ‘what happens when you shout at Nicola on the telly’.

The Scottish Labour leader paid tribute to Better Together research director Gordon Aikman, who has been raising money for motor neurone disease charity MND Scotland following his diagnosis earlier this year.

Ms Lamont nominated Finance Secretary John Swinney - ‘we’re debating together on Tuesday so this [nomination] should give things a bit of an edge’ - Glasgow council boss Gordon Matheson and her ‘dear friend’ Margaret Curran.

Ms Lamont’s completion of the stunt follows a flurry of weekend ice bucket challenges carried out by her deputy Anas Sarwar; Better Together chief Alistair Darling; First Minister Alex Salmond; Transport Minister Keith Brown and the BBC’s political editor Brian Taylor.
