His goal this year, he says, is to return to fitness after slipping to number 6 in the world rankings.

The latest assignment for Murray on his comeback trail is the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, where he accepted a late wild card.

“It’s a goal that I think every tennis player would have, we all want to do it,” he said when questioned about whether he was aiming for the world number one slot.

“The number one thing for me this year though is to get myself healthy again, get my body ready to compete in the grand slams. Yes if I have an opportunity to do it then I’ll definitely go for it but right now that’s not an immediate goal.

“When you come back from surgery you need to be patient with yourself and not expect too much in the first few months and then hopefully by the time the clay court season comes around my body should be 100 percent again.”
