Uruguayan dictator Bordaberry dies

FORMER Uruguayan president and dictator Juan Maria Bordaberry has died aged 83.

A conservative landowner, elected president in 1971, he ruled by decree after a "self-coup" in 1973 backed by the military. In 2006 he was charged in the killings of 10 detainees, among 175 killed under his regime.
