University staff vote to ballot for strike

STAFF at Dundee University have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike ballot in protest against plans to axe almost 200 jobs - 10 per cent of core staff - to save £8 million a year.

Under the cuts, approved at a meeting of the University Court on Monday, 193 posts will be shed across the four colleges. Dr Carlo Morelli, president of the Dundee University and College Union, said: "Management has so far refused to reject compulsory redundancies as a possible means of achieving financial stability. This has led the union to consider industrial action."
