UN envoy escapes roadside bomb blast

A ROADSIDE bomb yesterday hit a convoy carrying the United Nations' special envoy to Iraq, Ad Melkert, who managed to escape unhurt.

Iraqi police officials said that the bomb damaged the second-to-last vehicle in the UN-Iraqi police convoy as it was leaving the Shiite holy city of Najaf, 100 miles south of Baghdad.

The blast killed one policeman and wounded another three.
