Sectarianism in Scotland has never been far from the headlines over the past 50 years.

In the first episode of The Scotsman’s new ‘Weekend Bigots’ podcast, Kevan Christie interviews sports journalist Andrew Smith, who talks about the historical context to the rivalry between Rangers and Celtic.

They discuss how Irish-Catholic immigrants were originally unwelcome in Glasgow and other cities in Scotland, which is why they set up Hibernian in Edinburgh in 1875 then Celtic in 1888.

But with all that religious division in the past, why do the rivalries still run so deep? They discuss the issue in today's world of fake news and social media, and consider why sometimes fans cross the line.
