The announcement comes just days after the Asda supermarket chain revealed its is to offer customers an entire outfit including bride's dress, groom's suit and bridesmaids dresses for only 162. BHS will sell shoes and a garter to go with its outfit, bringing the total cost to just 140.

On average, brides can usually expect to shell out around 1,200 for a wedding dress.

Yesterday, a spokeswoman for the company said the outfit was perfect for women unable to afford an expensive wedding.

She added: "As the country emerges from recession, we anticipate people will still be watching the pennies when it comes to their big day.

"'This simple ensemble can be accessorised to suit the theme of any wedding and, as it is a two-piece, will suit most body shapes and sizes."
