Warning over dog treats

Dog owners have been warned to keep an eye on their pets to stop them swallowing decorations and overdosing on mince pies over Christmas.

Animal welfare charity Blue Cross said both kinds of casualties were among those seen at its animal hospitals at this time of year.

Already this month, vets at one of its animal hospitals have had to remove chocolate coin wrappers from one dog’s stomach, while another became sick after eating mince pies.

Caroline Reay, chief veterinary surgeon at the Merton hospital, in London, said: “The hustle and bustle of the festive season can be overwhelming for animals, and there are usually extra temptations around the home for inquisitive mouths.

“By all means treat your pet to some Christmas turkey, in moderation, but don’t be tempted to give them sweets as these can lead to weight gain, sickness or, in some cases, can be fatal.”
