US president is Frost’s No 1 interview, but it’s not Nixon

HIS showdown with disgraced former US president Richard Nixon inspired a hit play and Oscar-nominated film and has been voted the greatest broadcast interview ever.

But it is another TV encounter with an American politician – former president George Bush snr – of which Sir David Frost is most proud.

“Everybody had said that he never relaxed on television and when we did the first interview with him up at Kennebunkport, a little village in Maine … although we’d never met before, within ten or 15 minutes, he was talking just so frankly about his family and the daughter he lost through leukaemia,” Sir David, 72, said.

As for the Nixon interview, he said he “wouldn’t have wanted to be without that in my life”.
