US court dismisses MP’s rendition bid

A US federal court has dismissed a British MP’s bid to force American spy and security agencies to release information on the CIA’s rendition of terrorism suspects.

US District Judge Ricardo M Urbina said the suit brought by Conservative MP Andrew Tyrie is invalid because the Freedom of Information Act, under which he sought the information, forbids disclosing intelligence information to foreign governments.

Mr Tyrie headed a group of 50 members of parliament who sought information on the “extraordinary rendition” programme that allowed the CIA to extra-judicially apprehend suspected terrorists and transfer them to foreign countries for detention and interrogation.

Mr Tyrie also sought to learn about Britain’s participation.
