UKIP has blamed a technical problem for the disappearance of its official website overnight.

Visitors to Ukip.org this morning were greeted with a holding page of the service provider 123-reg.co.uk, with no access to any of Ukip’s pages.

It led to speculation on social media that the party had not paid the bill for the domain name.

But a Ukip spokesman said: “We have had a technical problem with the website overnight, it is being worked on currently and we will get it back up as soon as possible.”

The website is now back online.
