UK motorists face parking ‘postcode lottery’

MOTORISTS are facing a “postcode lottery” over the cost residential parking permits, with Edinburgh among the most expensive.

Across the UK, the cost of parking a car on city streets ranges between £750 a year to just 50p.

Edinburgh’s £280 a year charge for city centre permits is the fifth most expensive, behind Birmingham, Manchester and London boroughs, according to a new study from Churchill Insurance.

Glasgow also appeared in the top ten, ranking joint ninth with its £250 a year charge.

However, South Ayrshire is home to the UK’s lowest charges at just 50p a year.

Steve Barrett, head of Churchill Car Insurance, said: “Parking controls and permits play a huge part in keeping roads safe and clear, as well as ensuring residents have priority over spaces.

“Our research shows that parking permit costs vary considerably across the UK, so we’d urge motorists to factor this in when looking to purchase a new vehicle.”

Some local authorities, including Dundee City Council, do not charge for replacement permits if one is lost or stolen, while others can charge up to £60.
