Two injured as man falls 80ft from mall balcony

TWO men were hospitalised yesterday after a man fell 80ft from a balcony at London’s Westfield Stratford City shopping centre onto another shopper.

Witnesses said that the man was hanging by his hands and shouting before he let go, falling around two floors and landing on a passer-by at around 3.30pm yesterday.

The falling man sustained leg and pelvic injuries whilst the passer-by was taken to hospital with a head injury and back pain.

Workers in nearby shops spoke of their shock at hearing a loud thud before rushing to help, but one shop assistant hit out at the man for endangering so many lives.

Bystanders said that the passer-by walking underneath had taken the full impact of the man’s fall, which had effectively saved his life.

Shoppers described an ‘eerie silence’ after the man fell, with two taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

A spokesman for the Met Police said that there were not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

A shopping centre representative confirmed that staff were working with the emergency services.
