Two held after police shoot dead man in car

Two men were being questioned by police last night after a man was shot dead by armed officers in a countryside village during a pre-planned operation.

Terrified villagers caught up in the violent stand-off described it as “like something off a film” and told how they were shepherded to safety.

The man was shot after the car he was in was stopped in the village of Culcheth, Cheshire, at about 7:20pm on Saturday evening. Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) Specialist Operations branch performed first aid on him at the scene in a car park, but he died.

Two other men who were in the car were arrested.
