Two Britons killed in Majorca after helicopter bursts into flames

TWO Britons have been killed in a helicopter crash on the Mediterranean island of Majorca.

The helicopter came down in a wooded area between Abdratz and Estellencs on the south-west tip of the island around 11.10am yesterday.

Witnesses said it exploded and burst into flames in the air before plummeting to the ground.

Jose Luis Montoya, a spokesman for Majorca’s emergency services, said: “Firefighters, paramedics and police officers were immediately sent to the scene but unfortunately the two men were dead when they were found.

“The British consul has been informed and is making steps to identify the dead men and contact their families. We don’t know if they were residents on the island or holidaymakers.”

The British-registered helicopter had taken off at 10.40am from the Son Bonet airport in Palma. There are unconfirmed reports that the owner of the helicopter had taken his girlfriend’s father for a flight.

Meanwhile, a woman has been rescued after a small plane crashed into the English Channel off the coast of Guernsey. Her husband was still missing last night. The Royal Navy vessel HMS Tyne has joined the search.
