It is believed the child had a heart attack brought about by the nature of his injuries.

The baby had allegedly been raped and battered when he was admitted to hospital.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: “Kent Police can confirm that a baby boy was admitted to hospital in Dartford at about 7am on Thursday in a critical condition.

“The baby was transferred to a hospital in London for further treatment where his condition this morning is described as showing signs of improvement.

“A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, both from the Gravesend area, have been arrested in connection with the incident and have been released on police bail until Thursday 8 December while inquiries continue. This is an ongoing investigation.”
