In a picture redolent of the Spitting Image puppet of Lord David Owen, with then Liberal Democrat leader David Steel in his pocket, Salmond is seen looking down at the miniature Labour leader.

The new poster comes as David Cameron voiced fears over the SNP being Labour’s ‘only route to power’.

Some senior Labour MPs have refused to rule out a deal with the SNP if Miliband’s party fail to secure a majority in May’s general election while Nicola Sturgeon has suggested the Nationalists could work with Labour on an ‘issue-by-issue’ basis.

A statement posted on the Conservatives’ website read: “Labour are facing a wipe-out in Scotland - meaning a deal with the SNP is Ed Miliband’s only route to power.

“He is so weak, everyone knows he would be in Alex Salmond’s pocket - and hardworking families will pay with higher taxes, more spending, more debt and weaker defences in uncertain times.

“Share our new poster to let everyone know that a Labour-SNP deal would mean chaos for Britain.”

The Prime Minister has previously said the Labour leader should rule out an SNP deal ‘if he cares about this country’.

Pranksters on Twitter have already started producing their own versions, including one with a Solero ice lolly in place of Miliband, and another with the infamous picture of Miliband eating a bacon sandwich.
