Tories launch campaign video attacking Alex Salmond

The video highlighted that the SNP lost the independence referendum but raises the prospect of them holding the balance of power with polls suggesting they could win as many as 56 of Scotland’s 59 seats.

It follows Mr Salmond’s appearance on BBC’s Andrew Marr show where he said “the party that holds the balance holds the power”.

He added: “I think a confidence and supply deal is possible but voting issue by issue is probable.”

And he made it clear that despite Labour’s threat that they would “dare” the SNp to vote them down, Mr Salmond hinted SNP MPs would be willing to vote with the Tories again to oppose Labour proposals.

The video tells English voters: “You may have thought that after his defeat in the Scottish Referendum, Alex Salmond would have packed it in.”

But it adds: “Oh no. He’s set his sights on a bigger prize.

“By standing for the constituency of Gordon, he intends to take a seat at Westminster.

“And - with the SNP seats won from Labour in his grasp - put Mr Miliband into power and then call the tune.”

SNP Perth MP Pete Wishart said: “It’s getting clearer every day that the idea of a strong team of SNP MP’s holding real power for Scotland at Westminster has the Tories shaking in their boots – and it’s no wonder. The SNP holding the balance of power would make sure that David Cameron is locked out of Downing Street – and ensure the things that matter to Scotland are put firmly on Westminster’s agenda.”
