‘Up to a third of jobs part-time’

Up TO a third of workers in some parts of the UK are in part-time jobs, highlighting the shortage of full-time employment, according to a study.

The GMB union said one in four employees across the UK now worked part-time.

The biggest proportion was in Shetland, at 34 per cent, followed by the Isle of Wight, Dundee, Swansea, Bath, Bedford and Plymouth, all about a third.

GMB officer Kamaljeet Jandu said: “This mushrooming of part-time jobs is often at the expense of full-time employment and on many occasions part-time working is characterised by low pay, insecurity and bad conditions.”
