There's a grand old price to pay for looking your best every day

YOU could be mistaken for thinking that it is only celebrities who step out wearing clothes with a hefty price tag befitting their fame.

However, it appears that the average British woman is just as fashion conscious and often leaves the house wearing clothes and accessories worth more than 1,000.

A study of 3,000 Britons' dress habits found the typical female wears lingerie worth around 26, a skirt costing 30 and shoes worth 51. She also wears a top costing 22 and cardigan or jumper worth 38 and teams it with jewellery to the value of 378 along with a 76 watch.

Finally, as a finishing touch to the ensemble, she carries her 106 handbag which contains a purse holding cash, tickets and passes worth around 146.29 and a 106.06 mobile phone.

In total, with other items of clothing and accessories included, the average woman top-to-toe is worth 1,052.85 on a daily basis.

Scottish Style Awards founder Mary McGowne said: "I would say that the designer shoe and handbag phenomenon that continues to sweep the world of fashion could claim a very high portion of that 1,000."

"When you look at a pair of really fabulous shoes, you would expect to pay in the region 500 to 700, while gone are the days when an 'it' bag would cost you 400 or 500, now you're talking upwards of 800, so the grand figures doesn't surprise me really.

"I think it comes down to the fact that people are not afraid to mix designer with high street fashions."

She added that this had been fuelled by the phenomenon of big fashion names such as Christopher Kane and Stella McCartney designing lines for high street brands such as Top Shop and H&M.

However, women aren't the only ones splashing the cash on their everyday clothes. The survey showed that the typical man will don 959.01 worth of clothing before leaving the house.

Despite such an apparent profligacy, it is the combined cost of even the most basic pieces of clothing that mount up to bring the outfit to the grand mark.

The average male starts his day by putting on his underwear worth 5.96, 3.72 socks, trousers worth 36.05, shirt or top valued at 29.90, and jacket or jumper worth 44.13.

By the time he has pulled on a coat, tied his shoelaces and picked up his briefcase, wallet and phone, the average man's total is just shy of 1,000.

Naturally, the majority of people questioned believed the value of their outfit rises when they go out at the weekend or in the evening.

The average person estimates their outfit goes up by between 50 and 70 – as people save their most expensive jewellery for special occasions and best clothes for out of work.

Nikki Sellers, head of Sheila's Wheels insurance, which commissioned the survey, said that the figures showed how people easily underestimated the value of their wardrobe.

"The price tag associated with outfits and matching accessories can be considerable," she said. "That's where the importance of having the right insurance comes in. It's crucial not to underestimate the cost to replace a bulging wardrobe."
