The man who tells millions, ‘Cashier No 3, please’

This is the face behind one of our most famous voices – the one that tells shoppers: “Cashier number three, please.”Terry Green’s voice guides an estimated 30 million customers a month to vacant tills in 8,000 outlets across the country.

The checkout queuing system his company, Qmatic, first sold in 1988 is used by high street stores such as Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s and Boots.

The Post Office was the first organisation to use its linear queue system, and Qmatic now controls queues for a quarter of the world’s population.

But, despite Mr Green’s success, his identity has never been revealed – until now.

He said: “If you wander up and down most high streets in this country, you will hear me.

“The other day I was doing work for an NHS hospital and people were coming up to me and saying, ‘So you are the cashier number three person. Say it. Say it’.”
