Stephen Hawking inspires garden at Chelsea Flower Show

A GARDEN at this year's Chelsea Flower Show has been inspired by Professor Stephen Hawking.

The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association's garden at this year's show in May, entitled the Stephen Hawking Garden for Motor Neurone Disease, will be launched by Prof Hawking.

A founder member of the association, Martin Anderson MBE, is behind the design that will help raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease.

In 2008 Mr Anderson recreated a traditional Shetland croft house garden that won gold in the courtyard garden category and the Royal Horticultural Society people's choice award.

Talking about returning to Chelsea and the new garden design, Mr Anderson said: "I was asked to do Chelsea again and felt it had to be something to help us increase public awareness of MND.

"Then I had a flash of inspiration – Prof Hawking, which soon led to an idea for a garden design inspired by the title of his iconic book A Brief History of Time.

"The garden is about the evolution of plants and trees. It reflects the passage of time and gives a possible glimpse into the future, while parts of it also represent MND."
