The incident brings the number of cameras set alight in the Borders region alone to at least 20 since 2004.

In December, the camera housing was stolen from a device on the A68 near St Boswells, Roxburghshire.

In October vandals used a saw to damage speed cameras on the A68 near Earlston and Oxton.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said that safety cameras are located at places where there is a history of collisions and speeding; and removing the cameras puts all motorists at a greater danger.
