SNP to put pressure on Labour over Trident

ANGUS Robertson yesterday said the SNP would put pressure on Labour over Trident by calling an early debate on the nuclear weapons system at Westminster.

The SNP’s Westminster leader revealed his plans to capitalise on the confusion engulfing Jeremy Corbyn’s party on the issue.

Mr Corbyn believes in unilateral disarmament, a stance opposed by many of his senior colleagues who believe nuclear weapons should only be abandoned if other world powers agreed to do the same.

Speaking at the SNP conference in Aberdeen, Mr Robertson said: “Labour weren’t prepared to have a specific debate on Trident at their conference. I am pleased that the SNP is debating it here at our conference. I’m also happy to help Jeremy Corbyn and ensure that there is an early debate and vote at Westminster aimed at opposing Trident renewal.

“Hopefully Jeremy will join the SNP in the lobbies as he has often done in the past in opposing Trident, though I’m not holding my breath that he can bring his colleagues in the Parliamentary Labour Party with him.”

Briefing delegates on the activities of the SNP’s Westminster group, Mr Robertson said his party would “resolutely oppose” the renewal of Trident.
